French Broad River Afternoon

8 x 10 x .67″ oil

This plein air painting was made on location at the French Broad River Park, in Asheville North Carolina, during a paint-out with the Asheville Urban Landscape Project, our local plein air painting club. I t took me so long to find a spot that had long-range views of mountains, reflections, and interesting foreground foliage that I ended up staying long after everyone else had gone home.

I hope the viewer will feel absorbed into the beauty of the river as I did that afternoon. I hope my contemporary approach of rhythmic brush strokes and bright, thick impasto will calm and stimulate, and that the lyrical, almost abstract realism will provide a dense visual puzzle that continues to intrigue over time. Soft light and warmth from limited palette and deliberate brush strokes.

“I love the depth with the soft light and warmth, beautiful!” Thank you Kim Balchinas for that kind comment, well put!
