I create oil paintings that celebrate the architectural, geographic and cultural heritage of Asheville. Painting on location, I use indirect methods–first underpainting the value, then layering in the color of the light like the Impressionists. But I see a uniquely American poetry in the streets of Asheville, and think as much about Thomas Wolfe and Edward Hopper as Claude Monet. My paintings interpret light and form but also also suggest story and meaning.
